AIG posts $8.9 billion loss
February 26, 2010
By Paritosh Bansal
AIG’s general insurance unit, Chartis, and domestic life insurance and retirement services, SunAmerica Financial Group, showed improvement. But the market remained skeptical, and AIG shares fell 7.4 percent to $25.48 in Friday morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
“It could have been a better result,” said Bill Bergman, a senior analyst at Morningstar. “We have seen improvement in housing finance and credit markets in ways that AIG might have benefited to a greater extent than what we saw today.”
The loss shows the U.S. government, which owns nearly 80 percent of the insurer, still has a long wait before it gets back its direct investment in AIG, which includes about $25 billion outstanding under a Federal Reserve Bank of New York credit facility and roughly $45 billion in equity.
AIG reported a fourth-quarter adjusted loss of $7.2 billion, or $53.23 per share, compared with an adjusted loss of $38.5 billion, or $287.69 per share, a year earlier.
Analysts had been expecting a loss of $3.94 per share. It was not immediately clear whether the results were comparable with the estimates, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S…Read full story

H&R Block prepares fewer tax returns, won’t meet fiscal 2010 expectations
February 25, 2010
The recession and continued high unemployment have prompted more people to opt for saving money by preparing their taxes themselves, according to preliminary tax season results H&R Block Inc. released Wednesday.
That means H&R Block (NYSE: HRB) won’t reach its previous expectations for fiscal 2010. But CEO Russ Smyth said in a release that H&R Block is “aggressively targeting” the millions of clients who have yet to file their returns.
The news sent the company’s stock price tumbling as much as 19.4 percent to a low of $15.90 on Wednesday, from its Tuesday close of $19.73 a share. H&R Block shares closed at $17.32, down 12.2 percent, according to Yahoo Finance.
The Kansas City-based tax services giant has prepared 6.3 percent fewer tax returns — 10.06 million — through Feb. 15 than during the same span last year, when H&R Block prepared more than 10.7 million tax returns…Read full story

Atlas Pipeline Partners, Holdings post 4Q losses
February 24, 2010

Atlas Pipeline Partners LP dramatically reduced its fourth-quarter loss, primarily because its loss in the fourth quarter of 2008 was caused by a one-time charge.
The Philadelphia-based natural gas gathering and processing partnership said Tuesday evening that it posted a loss of $36.2 million attributable to its common limited partners and general partner in the fourth quarter of last year. That amounted to a loss of 70 cents per fully diluted common limited partner unit, which is a partnership’s equivalent of a share.
Atlas Pipeline Partners (NYSE:APL) posted a loss of $456.3 million attributable to its common limited partners and general partner in the fourth quarter of 2008. February 24, 2010
Bloom Energy produces Bloom Boxes which are refrigerator-sized personal power plant that produces energy cheaply and cleanly. The founder, K.R. Sridhar, told CBS’ 60 Minutes that it may one day replace the traditional power grid.
The company plans to debut the Bloom Box at an event featuring board member Colin Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State, and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The event is being held at eBay’s San Jose headquarters at 8:30 a.m. PST. eBay says it has been running a test batch of Bloom Boxes for the past nine months, and has saved 100,000 since it started using it.
